Vote for new Librarian Force Barrier

Postby Caeltos » Sat 03 May, 2014 2:49 pm

Okay, we have two different kinds of Force Barriers at the moment that are available for useage. Or 3 if you want the existing one, but I doubt anyone would want that.

So which one would you prefer, and why?

Force Barrier 1 (No channeling)
Requires no channeling during the ability. You simply click & drag from the target location and it'll fire away.

OR

Force Barrier 2 (Static Wall)
Simply makes a semi-large wall at the target location. Preventing units from passing through (and blocking projectiles?) requires no channeling either.

2 Is interesting and easy to use but 1 is simply straight up better, harder to control but with a much bigger varierty of uses, exactly as it is now, except with no risks of losing the libby because things go through the barrier.

So I'll go with 1.

Force Barrier
Basically it still functions the same as vanilla force barrier but this time without channeling I take it?

Force Barrier 2
By blocking projectiles do we mean perfect cover? And are we able to set the orientation of the wall? Preventing units from passing through? Are we talking all units including vehices or only certain sizes of infantry?

Apologies for so many questions.. Just wanna get my facts straight first before choosing

Force barrier 1, it just seems a much more tactical thing to use and so much better than having things beat up the libby whilst he casts it.
The internal battery has run dry, the game can now be played. However, clock based events will no longer occur.

1. Yes, exactly like that. It'll still be like an immediate 1ish second (He makes the swirly loop animation, then he is free to roam as the spell progresses in strength)

2. It's pretty much what the current one does as well. It blocks projectiles iirc, and knockbacks enemise trying to pass through it. The idea behind it is to be able to create a chokepoint at certain locations, much alike the regular one, but present more defensive-oriented playstyle opted to the Librarian.

Basically, the Librarian will no longer be Doomed stuck in that animation once he activates his Force barrier :P !? i Prefer 2nd option,no projectiles able to phase through and hurt the Lib,and the SM squadron is able to assault the flacking enemies in time, only Jump units are able to get to him i assume?

I'm setting up a stream to showcase the difference and some of the WIP stuff we've got going, just so you know we're working on the patch.

Wow, feels like a shameless adv, but at least I'll be able to show you the difference.

I like the static wall, how long would it last? Vote goes for option 2.

Prefer 2...
Can really screw over any approaching melee units or blastmaster strikes etc coming towards my (P)Devs and make them get that first shot easier

Let me get this straight: Does the Force Barrier affect allied units and projectiles?

Option 1, because it will be harder to control. Planting a static wall between a melee fight and their entire army would make it too easy to dominate every engagement. The first choice makes it require a good amount of skill while keeping the ability itself more interesting

Agreed. I like option 1 simply because it is a baby step.

Option 2 sounds like something that could be used to instantly isolate a walker or high value unit and that's exactly what you need to keep on the field against SM in T2. Although, I will need to watch the stream to see exactly how option 2 works.

I prefer 1. The ability is good enough as it is, and if the need of the Librarian to be static while casting is erased, it will be better. I would suggest a slight increase in the wall's cast speed, but that's all. I prefer this one.

The 2nd option looks like an eldar energy shield casted through the Librarian, and I don't think Space Marines need that. Space Marines are sturdy and powerful enough as they are; with this 2nd option the Librarian can trap enemies in retreat with an impassable barrier for assult marines to catch them easily. I don't think that's balanced nor necesary for them.

Option 1. Does keep the ability consistent whilst making it more practical. It would also offer more opportunity to use it since you can cast and retreat away.

Option 2. Feels a bit more like a griefing tool than anything else. Can't say I like it.

I did change how effective the existing one is. I haven't found anything that can just walk though the walls other than units unaffected by weapon knockback. I could send it in for testing if you want.

P.S. I don't need to fix the edges though. Its only the edges that need a little work done.

But if no one wants too, I'd choose 1.

Option 1.

2 is too drastic as area denial, but maybe something for the future.

I vote 1

2 seems quite easily exploitable to me. What happens if the barrier is cast in between a single unit?

For example, you have a single unit of guardsmen:

Cast force barrier in between the models:

X X X X !!! X X X X X

I can imagine that messing around with unit movement a wee bit too much.

Option 1 is so mcuh more desirable. Option two just seems too trolly to block projectiles and infantry moving in.

It already blocks projectiles.

We've all seen what the current iteration of force barrier can do. Option 1 would be a definite improvement, but I'm more interested to see what option 2 looks like after several weeks of testing in competitive play.

I vote option 2, for whatever my vote is worth.
