So what is actually happening in Turkey and why?
Re: So what is actually happening in Turkey and why?
It seems like this coup is being used to dramatically increase the power of the government with respect to detaining and punishing political dissidents. This bodes very poorly for Turkey if it turns out to be true.

Arresting 3000 judges "just coz".
Smart move, Erdogan, you'll never be part of the EU.

The internal battery has run dry, the game can now be played. However, clock based events will no longer occur.

Just like England and N. Ireland
But yeah, just wait and see how Turkey will still get into the EU. May I remind you of a country called Hungary...

It is a big bummer. Turkey felt like a country on some hard times, but with a lot of hope and potential, and a lot of people rooting for her. This coup, and the followup after it, seem really ominous. Erdogan has the terrible choice now between reconciliation and retaliation. I atheist pray he makes the right choice, since it will be Turkey that suffers if he chooses wrong, not himself.
Re: So what is actually happening in Turkey and why?
For those of us who were rooting for secular democracy in the Islamic world, Turkey is a big heartbreak. It has been close to a century since Ataturk laid the foundation for a country which was, at the time, more modern and secular than many countries in Europe... and now their president is just another Islamist lunatic (saying Islamist and lunatic is somewhat redundant, I know).
If a country like Turkey can have a huge jumpstart towards secular democracy and still regress a century later, I don't know what to think for the rest of the Islamic world. My hopes are extremely low to say the least, and the more reading I do the worse my impression gets.
EDIT - From what I have read so far, he seems to be increasing his power to suppress and punish political dissent, but I wonder how long it is until Islamic law starts making its way into Turkey's constitution. I can't be absolutely certain it will happen, but it just feels like this is the direction he is heading towards.

Wikileaks just released part one of a big dump of AKP emails dating from 2010 to July 6th 2016. You can even see it for yourself:
https://wikileaks.org/akp-emails/
From the site: The material was obtained a week before the attempted coup. However, WikiLeaks has moved forward its publication schedule in response to the government's post-coup purges. We have verified the material and the source, who is not connected, in any way, to the elements behind the attempted coup, or to a rival political party or state.
What a world we live in today.
