Britain has voted that it wishes to leave the European Union!

Postby Torpid » Fri 24 Jun, 2016 6:30 am

With a majority vote of 4%. 48% wishing to remain. 52% wishing to leave with a voter turnout of 72%.

So many questions come from this.

Internally, how will it affect our political parties? Will UKIP become more powerful stealing labour voters? How will the conservative leadership change and will that affect our current government?

What trade deals will the UK manage to get out of this?

When will it actually physically, literally leave the EU And how will it do it?

Will Scotland decide to leave the UK now, since the vast majority of the Scots did want to remain?

And most importantly how will this affect the EU itself? Will other EU member states decide to leave themselves?

All I know is that you know nothing Jon Snow, you meaning me. But I *think* it'll be bad for EU and it's credibility will take a major hit.

I think it will be bad for the European Union, but not Europe itself. Nor the world even. East Asia. Africa. The US and European economies in 20 years time would be far better off without the EU and I hope it falls! Crumbles and burns.

Unfortunately it will recover once the panic settles down. I wish you'd get rid of your stupid pound already, it makes buying stuff from UK more expensive for no good reason.

Edit: I just realized I might have to start paying import tax too when buying from you guys cos you'll be outside of EU... :?

I really hoped that this site would be free of politics, but I hoped in vain. Oh well, let's join in then.

It's going to be odd. The pound will devalue for a while whilst we renegotiate all our deals but hopefully we can put more into our own economy. That said, we're still part of the EU all the way into 2018 and will still be paying into it for the next two years, so it is by no means set in stone. There's already a petition that's growing very fast to call a second referendum vote, though considering the Conservative dominated parliament it's unlikely it'll make it through the House of Commons.

As for speculation, well, Boris will become PM probably, Osbourne will be ousted and Gove will become Chancellor. The right wing of the party will dominate the cabinet and the remain supporters will be moved to the back benches. Corbyn is being called to resign after a very shoddy disply of mixed messages and remaining mostly silent on the matter, despite apparently urging the party to vote stay. Unjlikely he'll go but if he does, we may see one of the more popular and idealistic candidates like Chuka Umunna take his place, which could be a really good thing for the party.

Scotland will call a vote for independence all over again and they'll leave in order to rejoin the EU. It'll be a strong term for the SNP who will ride a wave of nationalism until they snuff themselves out when the Scots realise that the SNP can't run the place.

It's an interesting time, and I wonder how long the new Tory government is going to last.
The internal battery has run dry, the game can now be played. However, clock based events will no longer occur.

Why? I'd honestly love to hear your take on this. Brexit is very confusing to me...

As an outsider, the only arguments for leaving the EU that ever seemed logically sound were anti-immigrant sentiments. Foreigners changing ones country is challenging, and having "external" governments make such decisions is tricky. The rest seemed like ether lies, guesses or nationalism - which are fine reasons to vote, but not very good for making assertions like the one you are making.

That said, projecting power on the world isn't necessarily the metric for the greater good or whatever. So what is yours? Why world the world be better off without the EU?

My quick high level thoughts on it go like this:
As a gamer, sci-fi fan and atheist, my goals are for humanity to leave this planet and build the biggest battleships and win.
So I'm always in favor of things that seem like they will help ensure humanities continued growth and survival as a whole. It's safe to say that I'm not very nationalistic ;)
The world with 1 super power seemed bad, though not as bad as when there were 2 that hated each other.
I like seeing China rise as a power, since while I find aspects of their culture distasteful, the US and them are not shaping up for anywhere near the kind of hostility that existed in the cold war. South China Sea worries me, but we'll see.
I also like seeing the EU as a collective super power that is uniquely different then either the US or China. It's a messy bureaucracy as opposed to a robotic managed state or a country run by oligarchs. I also like how member countries have so much more freedom as opposed to states which have almost none, and Chinese provinces which have literally none.
In short, bring on a variety of super powers, with different outlooks, to be checks and balances to each other. Just make sure they are all tied to each other economically! EU style amalgamated mega-countries seem much more healthy for the world then actual mega-countries like China and US.

I dig this:

And I think that's vert true, the concept of the EU is a good one, and I did vote to remain, but it was also a very badly executed one.

Can't barrage the Farage.

On a serious note, I understand why the UK wants to detach itself from a big clunky bureaucracy like that. I once heard the EU described a family of 28 where 3 people have jobs... seems quite appropriate.

Well sure there are only the 3 major players but EU is mostly made up of smaller countries so... If you look at this list instead of Cyris' it's a very different picture. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(nominal)_per_capita

There's a petition for a second referendum with 3.1 million signatures. El oh el.

These petitions don't change anything. And for context, someone also started a petition to call a new election which got shot down, and then someone decided that the Normans winning the battle of Hastings was unfair, so they made a petition to have it refought :]

Our goverment news also said it's really easy to fake a "signature" for that petition since you don't have to prove your identity anyway. Their reporters tried to sign it and were succesful.

Does this mean the UK can now choose which immigrants to take in (for example, educated nice people), instead of being the homeless shelter of the world?

No, because we haven't left yet.

Lol.

That would be a possibility upon leaving the EU though.

That's gonna take about 30months though.

Ya, bad wording on my part, I knew they hadn't left yet. I meant would this be the case when they finally leave.
