Need a bit help here ^^

Postby Kilgarn » Sun 13 Jul, 2014 6:11 pm

Hi guys ^^

Apologise if this is not the rigth topic to write something like this =)
Just this seemd the most appropriate :D

So, as some of you may know, I've started working in a full-time job some time now(hence why you seen a big drop in uploads recently).
While its normal to earn as much in this country, I know far too well that this is not even the base payment in Germany, UK, France, USA, ect, so I figured I might as well try to look around when it hit me that I could ask around for opportunities from the friends I know on the net =) Then I can get going from there ^^

What I basically seek is first and formost an art related job =) Not sure if there are people here that can point me to the right direction, but its worth a try, isn't it ? :D And if this wont succeed, then a normal, administrative or such kind of job =)
I know it wont be the simplest thing in the life to do, but I really want to advance with my career in art, which is nearly impossible in this country (due to the fact that we are quite in the baby-shoes when it comes to art industry like concept art or digital art in general ^^;). So, I'd like to ask you fair lot to help me out in this regard :)
Getting a job though friends would be a lot more preferable ^^ As you could guess, moving is not an issue xD Had move 31x times already so 1-2x more wont be a big issue :P
I know this is a huge favour to ask... but I want to get a chance to reach my dream - which is working in either the film or gaming industry ^^

I really love this community and I hope you guys can help me out a bit in this! :D
One the upside would be that I could draw more awesome stuff ^^ So its a definite win-win :P

Feel free to write here or a Note =)

Thanks a lot for reading =)

(For non-hungarians here is a little info: The standard avrage payment one can get is 100-120 000 Ft which roughly translates to 440-530$ or 320-390 EUR. No this is not the food support, this is our full payment for a month. Actually, not full, since taxes and whatnot lowers it further xD Note that everything has the same price (if not a bit more pricy) then in other europian countries to the west :P I let that sink in for a moment... :)

Well, have you tried contacting companies which would require lots of art? Websites for games, gaming forums, set up an area where you take commissions? I think they could be good places to start, just churn things out and send them off and see what it is like at the end, you may end up with offers. And 320-390 Euro per month? :'O

To echo Swift: 320-390 Euro per month?!?!?!?

That can't be true because I have a shit job with minimum pay and I make 1600 Euro a month.

(I live in Iceland btw)

Yeah but Kilgarn is in eastern Europe, Iceland is a lot better off than certain eastern areas.

you need connections. see if you can find people online in your general vicinity (idk if there are any artist websites for hungry) and ask them if they know of any jobs in a pm. also, be willing to move.

Yeah, I suppose... kinda re-enforces the answer every single immigrant keeps telling me when I ask them why they came here of all places: Because it's safe here and that the pay is much, much better.

I always wanted to go to Iceland. I like the place a lot and it's always been my first thought when i think about moving out.
But how easy it is to find a job there?

I was now thinking about New Zealand because i know that there is easy to find jobs, and they speak English as first language.
I'm planning to go out from here in about 6 months.

I have always been interested in Scandanavia, but since when did this become a thread discussing your own whims? Many polish people have moved to England because they can work for less than minimum wage, more than they would get in Poland.

Whoa a lot of comments :D
Lets see in order of appearance ^^

@Swiftsaber --- Tried the bigger companies that I know of, some publishers too (mid-high ones ^^). I'm on several gaming forums and other sites (SW:TOR, ESO, this, deviantart, tumblr, ect ^^). Already working for a publisher as a freelancer (whom I did the Pathfinder's Bestiary pics :D), but thats not a relyable source of income. Since publishers not always have a job =)
I do have commissions, but since because I'm not known yet and have mostly gamer clients who can't pay big, I can only make barely a living out of it. Freelance commissioning is nice, but not a relyable way of income. Since I cant predict in advance, how many clients I'll get in a month. Its not always constant. I had a few month when I dont had any commissions. :P I cant live off of solar light soooo :D
What I need is more likely contatcs and what places I should knock in? Like, I know a few gamer companies, but the big-fish most likely wont hire me, I still need to step up my level in my art to get there (I'm not pessimist, I just know I still have a way to go :D they need high-end material, I can bring a good upper mid level ^^)

And yes... wages in the eastern EU is crazy x) Ukrain for example has worse salary then we got xD 100-120k Ft is a standard salary that one can be really happy to get. Most ppl get a 90k wage or worse.

@viggih --- well I dont lie mate =) you can ask the hungarians, and most ppl will tell you these numbers. There are payments like 250-350k Ft, but thats for mid line bosses mostly :) And ofc there are higher, but those are for company leaders and stuff x)

@Discreet --- Uhm... what ? XD If I could get 350ish Euro for one piece of work it would be crazy and great :) But yea, most of the time I get 150$ :) (110 EUR)

@Nuclear Arbitor --- basically a good advice, however there is one problem with it: hungarian artists have the bad habit to not share contacts since good sources are rare and they dont want a competition... and with everything in this bloody country, if you are not a friends of somebody, then you have near impossible odds to solve it :/
That and most artist dont use digital, they stuck at the traditional art + abstract art. Which means, all they could give is name of galleries and whatnot which cant use my digital artwork xD
Problem is, as I've written, in my country, modern, digital art is technically non-existant. They start to realise its there but no infrastructure or that many company that would utilise artists that are illustrators (TV stations and such utilise graphic designers but thats a whole different field). The few publishers still alive in this country have a set amount of artists they hand out their work and thats it. Sadly if you are not a friend of somebody in this country you cant get access to the good job spots. Its quite corrupt here :/ Every artist who is working in digital and have a half brain is already working for foreigners or living outside.
I dont know of a solid hungarian art portal thats not full of small wannabe-artist kids that could give me a solid answer to my question. And most artists in hungary use Deviantart, which I'm on already :) And posted the same question in my wall. No answer yet. Might need to do that on the main forums perhaps... ?
But true. What I need ASAP are connections. Which I lack badly :/ So good point :)

@ChrisNihilus --- Good luck with New Zeland mate =) Hopefully you succeed ^^

Good luck to you Kilgarn, if I were you I would be moving to somewhere else in Europe where they will be happy to speak English to you (Finland, Denmark, Germany etc.). Would mean you are much closer to the people who will be taking an interest in your stuff and they aren't so stuck in the Dark Ages as it sounds the Hungarians are.

And about Chris, succeed? He isn't on a campaign, just an excursion :P

You could always apply to Relic.

They have been looking for artists for quite some time, I believe you can still apply under general application.

Omg thanks for the headsup Caeltos :D
For some reason, ever since THQ gone down the sewers and all the companies got bought up, I totally Relic xD
Even tho, they are under SEGA now =) Which is good I think ^^
Anyways I'll get right there and apply ^^
Hope for the best ;)

@Swiftsabre --- Well yea, thats why I want to move to a foreign country =) I got fed up with the prehistoric feeling thats going around in my country :/ I really like this place, I do. But things like these makes life here a living nightmare XD
And I'd really want to work for a bigger game company if I can help it ;) I just need one foot in the game industry =) once inside its a lot easier to move around ^^ Since then I can get contacts =)

Ahh, but therein lies the "problem". You see, to get a job in Iceland you have to know somebody. Because in a country where everybody knows everyone else (I exaggerate, but that's the stereotype) this becomes doubly important. Now I might hear you say; "But viggih, all countries have some form of nepotism or other" To which I would reply: True.

But (And this is a pretty large and stinky But(hehe)) Icelandic culture revolves around it which means you can't get anywhere without "knowing a guy".

I might be able to get some eyes on your art(speaking to Kilgarn here specifically) with CCP, the guys that make EVE Online (I know a few people that work there), but you would have to apply.

Mate that would help me a ton =)
Every bit helps :D + I really like CCP's EvE Online ^^
Too bad my computer can't handle it much, othervise I'd play it :D (played it for a few weeks before, its really massive *-* was a miner-hauler :D)
I'll apply tomorrow, too damn tired at the moment (lol its 00:20 here o_O ouch...) xD Wanted to go to sleep just checked the forum one last time :D And I'd love to talk to some ppl from CCP =) Even if I don't get in, getting connections would be top priority :D + having some comments on me artwork by an artist from there would be golden too =) So I know what I need to polish ^^

honestly, that's kind of what i expect out of the former soviet union :\ it's got a reputation... it's a problem though in other places as well. i'm in school for game design in general, with an art emphasis, and it's been pretty clear for a while that that's how the industry operates in the united states. you're probably going to have to move in order to get a good job but moving before something comes up is pretty dicey, especially if you don't have a lot of money.

as for making contacts, that's really tough when you can't deal with people on a personal level. it's much easier in person but also doable online, although it would probably require a forum as sites like deviant art are basically showcases and ego builders...

Well, it takes really outdated PC to be unable to handle EVE on minimals.
Btw, CCP isn't known for being a good company to work for. Turnover is said to be massive. Stuff like that surfaced recently, perhaps it has something to do with CCP closing entire projects (project management is a story on it's own really) and losing some key employees.

Well, as funny as it may sound we DON'T have schools specialising in that field you going for (hell, the first digital art class started in 2010...). At most, we have traditional art schools and even those are quite outdated and stuff... like if you'd walk into the '80s, really xD People got caught up in their petty affairs and we all basically focus on month-to-month survival. Even if its not said out loud, but people in my country are already resigned and indifferent what happens around them x)
And I got pretty much fed up with this. And I want to switch.

Yea, thats the main issue here. Making contatcs personally, it always has a more lasting feeling then conversing with people over the internet. However, thats what I can do only now. Nobody in my family is an artist, so they cant really give support in that regard, so I'm on my own in this.
Yeah, noticed that quality of DA recently. Its quite an ego-builder and show-off place. Altho I did get most of my commissions though there, I feel I'm missing out on the most important part: building contacts.
Now, this may sound a bit funny, but I really have no clue where or how to start that xD I did try on various sites, game forums, ect, (like conceptart.org, DA, Tumblr, and so on), but these are not really the places where you can get the crutial contacts that I'd need. Most likely conventions like E3 would get me a lot closer to such, but conventions like this... I dont know any of in Hungary to be held. Sure... there are various AnimeCon and whatnot xD
I've been to Lucca once, to the Game and ComicCon held every year. Back then I was drawing with pencil on paper :) Regardless, I did manage to get some cards, but yea :D I'd need to go on such places more often, but I lack the funds X)

The only relevant gaming company left in Hungary after Black Hole Entertainment closed its doors is Crytek Hungary. But its way off my league to try there XD I'm not that good enough yet :D
Too bad you can only go to internship programs while you are studing in school :/ (or if you can, I just missed that one :D) Such an opportunity would be golden for me, since I could have hands on time with pro's on the field and learn anything I can get my hands on =)
All I know about digital drawing now is because of Deviantart and other online places that I could snatch some ideas :P But I'm at the stage when I'd like to have somebody who shows me the ropes and tricks of the trade. Its really hard to learn and study on your own :( Especially when the art teacher comes in the first time when I was in collage and says she wont teach anything, she will just correct our mistakes what we make whe we are drawing live models or other set up things.
All this in 3 1/2 - 4 hour a week -_- Yeah... thats basically nothing ^^ So yea, what I know now is a mix of everything I could find on the net :P The good old advice "pracitce-practice-practice" gets quite old when you dont know how or what way to train your skills further? And its a bad idea to learn something stupid. It takes a lot more time to un-learn it x) Hence why I'd like to get into some kind of art department in a gamind company :D I'm a fast learner =)
Too bad there were no internship programs in my school :/ It would made a world of a difference if I could've done that actually :) But sadly, artists in this country keep their contacts on a tight guard, not willing to share them :/
So its quite an interesting proposition to live off of art in this country xD

And yea, I want to move to a foreign country =) English based most likely ^^; Since my german is... not up to par :D yet :D And right now I'm saving up to have enough money to move ^^ The only question that remains is the good ol' Where?" :)

@Barrogh --- Yeah, noticed the laying offs at CCP, especially after DUST 514 went offline. A shame really, was a good idea, but the implementation wasn't the best x)
I'm not picky actually. I know every company has its ups and downs. Some has more downs xD But first I'd need a leg into the art industry. Right now I'm at the door :) Just dunno which door to knock on :D

Black Library book authors... Eternal Crusade art development team. Art can be linked into many things so I suggest you take action towards gaming industry's art considering your talents are at best as I have witnessed.

Not sure if these will pay well but here you go
