OK - so do you throw them on your own guys / allies to make it harder to shoot them

OR

Throw them on the enemy to hinder their shooting?

On your own guys. I don't know how they can't see too but apparently that's how it should work in 40k.

Maybe they have x-ray glasses 8-)

Inferior SM smoke is very situational, unlike superior catachan smoke.

Ah great - that's what I've been doing.

Suddenly occurred to me that I could be blinding my own guys

There's two types of smoke.

One that doesn't reduce outgoing damage.
This is used by operatives + catachans

One that does reduce outgoing damage.
This is used by kommandoes and the razorback.

So with operatives/cats you always want to throw it on your own guys. With the razor/kommando one, you can do to save a vehicle if it cannot avoid some AV by simply moving away but you need more time to force it off with something else, or a similar application, but doing it in a big engagement throwing it on your ranged squads is not wise as it gimps them entirely.

It isn't a very clear mechanic.

Catachan smoke also reduces incoming courage damage to 0 which is very handy if you want to force off setup teams. You simply throw the smoke grenade on the spot from where you want to fight the setup team and then move in. Don‘t throw it afterwards (unless caught by surprise) since you lose valuable time recovering the already lost courage.

People need to realize how amazing Catachan smoke grenades are in T1.
