Announcing the new Balance Head and the Future of Elite Mod

Postby Atlas » Mon 28 Nov, 2022 6:49 pm

Hello everyone, it's Atlas again! I'm writing this to update you all on the current Elite Mod structural organization as well as to give you a taste of what to expect for the mod going forwards.

The Here and Now
Image
For those of you who don't know, during the production of the latest version of Elite Mod, Adila decided to step down. After several years of working for the mod, he wanted to recharge his batteries and pursue other passions. It happens to everyone, and we thank him for the time he dedicated to us. Thanks again Adila!

However, in so doing we had to change up our plans for what we planned to release this last patch and so we took a conservative approach and shifted some items to later editions. It also left us in need of a balance head.

After asking some figures around the community if they wanted the post, most preferred to advise and some outright declined.
So that left us to promote internally and as a result, I will be the acting balance head for the foreseeable future! I hope to serve you all well.

Now, for the part everyone cares about - the coming patch and plan from here. We're expecting to release a patch in time for Christmas this year using what leftovers are available from the last patch's production as well as any balance changes we believe fit for live service. The patch will be released through all the usual channels, so you'll be able to find it via the Discord server, through the forum post here and as a link on the home page of the website. Naturally, the changelog will also be included in the forum post.

Before the patch is released, we'll be putting out a beta version that will be available to try out around mid-December. The beta version will be an opt-in build that you will be free to play as you want. Its purpose is to help iron out bugs and see the effects of changes in a more open environment. Note however, that the beta version may not necessarily be wholly reflective of the entire contents of the live version.

This Patch and Beyond

First off, here is the basic layout of who is currently working and who is being onboarded.

We've began the process of onboarding several new specialists to help handle our database and server needs in Chessbrain and Arthur Cloud and our website needs with life, Generic Username and Tain to assist Adeptus Noobus and offer their own expertise in their own fields. As a result, we're expecting updates to the replay parser, database and website sometime in the coming 2-3 months.

Inekura will be joined by a cabal of balance advisors and others on the staff such as Shoulder Mount, enlargingcloud and Swift to assist in the drafting of changelogs and advising for speculative changes. They will handle much of the design and balance of units/pvp gameplay. Of course, we will still be active in gauging community judgment on the state of the game and be using you, the players, as the primary motivation behind justifying our changes.

With me moving to a more administrative position, Shoulder Mount will now officially be the Head Techpriest. He will be leading our efforts in Cope's Toolbox. To aid him, we are onboarding several Cope's Toolbox users in Flynn Stone and Bloodrain. Snowkip also will assist in more general roles.

YellowmonkeySoulEater has been doing well as the community manager and Impregnable will assist with changelog formatting and production as well as providing some translation service to parts of our community.

Enlargingcloud has been instrumental in helping to gain new assets, making new skins, integrating new animations and FXs for us to use as well as several other passionate Dawn of War creators! Yreet and Clocktickin have also been great producers for animations and new model assets in their own rights.

Garrick and Noot, truly the oldest and wisest of our kind, continues their own work in offering insights into the game engine and hoping to unlock all its secrets for us to manipulate in the future. We also want to give a special shout out to HelplessCelt who has offered their knowledge on DLL injection.

Garrick and iToaster will also continue to develop our understanding of the sound system in Dawn of War 2.

Map makers are quite various with Inekura and Swift with Flynn Stone being onboarded to assist.

With this expansion in our staff, we believe our coming patches will be more ambitious than ever before. To kick it off, we'll be attempting a fix to the hero select menu through the beta of our Christmas patch. We are already aware of some current shortcomings with this solution but nevertheless we wish to see the community feedback on their preferences of its implementation. More details on how exactly this affects your experience will be detailed in the beta version release.

Additionally, we will continue to look for ways to add new content for players to enjoy. Our current priorities are the implementation of new units, new maps to destroy your enemies on as well as new game modes to play for those who are looking for different ways to enjoy the game. These kinds of updates will take time, but we believe you can expect these in the next 2-3 patches.

Finally, we're still looking for new organizers and referees to help bolster League operations now and in the future. If you have any interest in helping out, please seek out yellowmonkeySoulEater through the Elite Mod Community Discord ( https://discord.gg/7Y3CY4GRCy ).

Thank you for taking the time to read through all this if you have, and we hope you enjoy playing Elite Mod now and in the future!

Ok, I've made a series of necessary edits to the current credits for our development team. I apologize profusely to them for forgetting to add them in on the initial post!

Not as much as I would like to have! But it's true - most of my time I've spent with the game has been on the backend for a while now. I'm working to rectify that and be far more in the front and visible. That being said, I am very self-aware about my current skill level and where I will fit best in the puzzle and I'm confident the feedback of players and the advisors within the team can shoulder most of the balance load.

Thank you! Maybe we can cajole Adila to come back for League! Doesn't hurt to ask at least and the worst he could say is no, right? We currently have a shortage for people to handle event organization and the like. There's been several streamers that do their own versions themselves but we'd like to keep events up and running for players to enjoy!
