Running Elite Mod in Linux Does Anyone Do This?

Postby WoehlkeTAD » Sat 17 Jan, 2015 6:34 am

Hello everyone,

Several months back I was curious if people managed to get DOWII up and running in Steam using Wine in a linux environment. My search came up negative, but I searched for it again tonight and found that one linux user did in fact get DOWII running in linux with Wine.

Link to the video here:

I was wondering if anybody else has tried this? I was also wondering if this would crash games, by causing sync-errors and such. This is of particular interest to me as I reformatted my computer prematurely with a boot disk that was broken, and refuse to pay ASUS the $50 asking price for a replacement because they have a slightly different boot disk than the standard Windows 7.

Well after giving this a try I did manage to get DOW Retribution to run, and load a multiplayer game, but the game didn't take any inputs from my keyboard, and after about a minute of play a sync error occurred as was suspected might happen. Maybe if I was more of a linux and wine expert I could make something happen but I'm just going to assume this is not going to be an option for me. That being said the frame rate after running the performance test on all the lowest settings did provide a tolerable frame rate.

I would like to know this to. I have installed Retribution and the previous expacs on Ubuntu/Debian 14.04 and the game works fine (so long as you don't change the graphical settings.) When I download the Elite mod, I don't get prompted for the install once it's done downloading from google drive. Mega and the other link don't work.

I get the raw data files, put them in the right spot, but it does absolutely nothing. I downloaded the steam copy of the game, have went through the local files and that jazz, but to no avail. So if anyone with Linux experience could help me with this, I would greatly appreciate it.

Getting Elite Mod running on a Mac is not too hard. It's not really any different from running other windows games.

To do this, I installed Wineskin, X11, Steam Windows Client, DOW 2 Retribution, then Elite Mod. It was a little confusing at first, since there was a conflict between Wine and the Razer Synapse drivers I had installed. Once I removed those, things started working very well.

Here's how I did it. Start by watching this video, which explains how to install X11, Wineskin and Steam.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47lGFtKKfZ8

You can find these programs at the following links:

http://wineskin.urgesoftware.com/tiki-index.php
https://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac
http://store.steampowered.com/about/

A few notes:

- This video is about a year hold, the latest version of Wine is WS9Wine1.7.51. It fixes the text issue on it's own, no need for the -no-dwrite flag.

- Pay attention to the point about Show Package Contents. You will want to go into the package at some point and change settings using the Wineskin app contained in the bundle.

This should get you to the point where you can run the Windows Steam client on your Mac. From there, go to the Library and install Dawn of War 2 Retribution. It will download the same way as any Steam game, and can be launched from within Steam.

When you launch the game, the first thing you want to do is go into the Options panel and change graphic options. A lot of people have reported issues running the game with Anti-Aliasing on. This does not affect me, but it's a good thing to try if you are having problems.

After getting it to launch, I found that community games work just fine, but campaign mode never wants to work. I am okay with that, but there are reports about people having the opposite problem using older builds of Wine. You can read through those reports on the WineHQ App DB, and here's a link to the page for this game:

https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager. ... &iId=22942

To install EliteMod, I downloaded it and installed it using Wineskin. To do this, I did the following:

- Right-clicked on the Steam app to get Show Package Contents.
- Opened Wineskin
- Clicked the install Software option
- The Elite Mod banner showed on the screen, the installation went as planned afterwards.

From there on, I can run EliteMod for multiplayer games.

Another issue I had to deal with was with flickering graphics. To get rid of it, in Wineskin, I went to screen options and checked the boxes for Use Mac Driver instead of X11 and Use Direct3D Boost.

That's it, hope this helps!

I got DOW2 to work fine but I can't get elite mod to work. Using the install wizard puts a .lnk and a .desktop shortcut on my desktop, neither of which work. I can't find a button to play elite in the folder where DOW2 is installed either :(

Help would be great! Thanks.

Start with

Code: Select all

steam.exe -applaunch 56400 -nomovies -modname Elite

Or add "-modname Elite" to launch parameters for dow2 inside steam
